When the British Special Branch catches Martin in the act and coerces him to inform on the Irish Republican Army in lieu of jail time, he takes the bait, knowing full well the army will kill him if they find out. Once his girlfriend, Lara (Natalie Press), becomes pregnant, the income the British provide becomes more necessary than ever. Further, Martin's sympathetic handler, Fergus (Ben Kingsley in fine form), turns out to be even more of an ally than his best mate, Sean (Kevin Zegers). During Martin's days with the IRA, he also meets the flame-haired Grace (Rose McG! owan in an underwritten role), who offers him a vision of a different life. The title refers to the belief that Martin's intelligence saved the lives of 50 potential targets, though the film suggests he acted more out of self-interest than a sense of duty. It's also hard to imagine that anyone raised in Northern Ireland could remain so resolutely apolitical--but it isn't inconceivable either. The real-life informer survived where many others did not, though he's been living under an assumed name since. But clearly Tom loathes both himself and everything he does. One night he accidentally runs into the man who managed Tom's mother, who was a pianist; the manager asks Tom himself to audition, as Tom once showed promise. All at once Tom hires a tutor and neglects his "duties," raising the ire of his cohorts but starting to make himself happy. This could be hokum about the power of! art, but Duris' performance is so visceral, so emotionally vivid and engaging, that The Beat That My Heart Skipped becomes a remarkable parable about the danger of betraying yourself--all the more powerful because Tom's life doesn't simply get better, it grows dangerously more complicated. In the very next room is John C. McGinley, cheating on his jealous future bride, Illeana Douglas, with Talisa Soto, a dominatrix in tight leather. The film plays out these threads as if they are destined to intertwine in some improbable climax, but instead they merely crisscross in passing, finally fraying in a soft, anticlimactic conclusion. She's in loosey-goosey form, with a sparkling drunk scene and a few well-snapped put-downs (the latter mostly directed at her shiftless husband, Bryan Cranston). Larry has mildly happy experiences: front-lawn conversations with yard-sale neighbors Cedric the Entertainer and Taraji P. Henson, budding friendship with a cute young Gen Y'er (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her boyfriend (Wilmer Valderrama), and teacher's pet status with his econ prof (George Takei). For the most part, though, Hanks makes Larry Cr! owne as though conducting an experiment in how few serious! conflic ts you can put into a movie and still have it be a movie. Unfortunately, this means the film's pleasantness feels pretty slack, and while you may get a few smiles out of the situation, you won't get too many chortles.
