La Belle Noiseuse is a thrilling and unconventional drama about the responsibility of an artist to his vision and the conflicts that arise when such responsibility is perceived as a threat to others. Michel Piccoli (Le Doulos) delivers one of his finest, most lived-in performances as Edouard Frenhofer, a famous painter living with his artist wife Liz (Jane Birkin) on a spacious estate in the French countryside. Frenhofer has lacked inspiration for a decade and has given up on painting.! The idea behind his unfinished masterpiece, La Belle Noiseuse ("The Beautiful Troublemaker"), has been seemingly unattainable for a decade; Liz was the original model for it, and Frenhofer's exhaustion with the project has an emotional parallel to his dispassionate relationship with her.

Along comes a rising artist, Nicolas (David Bursztein), who suggests that his girlfriend, Marianne (Emmanuelle Béart), a writer, could help Frenhofer jumpstart the painting's completion. From this point, most of La Belle Noiseuse becomes a remarkable, seemingly unedited and privileged look at the development of a bond between artist and muse. Béart, fiercely brilliant, spends the majority of the film nude and continually molded into sometimes-painful positions as Frenhofer struggles--sketch after sketch, paint upon paint--to find something beyond the obviousness of Marianne's body. As the two struggle to meet each other halfway, Liz and Nicolas feel marginalized and je! alous, putting pressure on Frenhofer to disregard such persona! l concer ns or give in to them. Having spent most of her young life in a hospital, Min-a keeps her true feelings and her malformed left hand hidden from the world. That is until Yong-jae, a photography major at a nearby university, moves into the apartment below her. In spite of her feigned disinterest, his good-natured antics begin to draw her out of her shell. A simple story of love and friendship, the film could have easily ended up being contrived and patronizing. But instead, ``...ing'' is a young adults film in the best sense. Like the earlier films of John Hughes, ``...ing'' is successful at taking the teenager's world at face-value, warts and all. But whereas most films about teenagers present the characters as trying to grow up too fast, ``...ing'' is happy to let kids be kids, enveloping the movie in a tenderness and sadness that feels surprisingly genuine. Starring Kim Rae-won (MBC's "Rooftop Room Cat") , Yim Soo-jung and Lee Mi-sook, romance comedy "...ing" narrates a romantic love story in sorrow and in joy. Min-ah (Yim Soo-jung) is a typical high school girl dreaming of her romantic first love. She meets Young-jae (Kim Rae-won), a college student living next door, and begins dating with him. As Min-ah goes out with Young-jae, she worries that he is not that devoted to her. Driven by her insecurity, she then tracks Young-jae to peek his female friends. Although Young-jae gradually gains her trust, Min-ah still hesitates to convince herself that her real love has arrived when she unveils her feeling to her mother Mi-sook (Lee Mi-sook).

Sara (Julia Stiles) wants to be a ballerina, but her dreams are cut short by the sudden death of her mother. She moves in with her father (Terry Kinney), who she has not seen for a long time, in Chicago, mainly in the ghetto. She gets transferred to a new school where she is the only white girl there. Her life takes a turn for the better when she is friends with Chenille (Kerry Washington). Later, she falls in love with Chenille's brother, Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas).Save the Last Dance! enjoyed a profitable release in early 2001, with box-office earnings that exceeded anyone's expectations. Its performance illustrates the staying power of a formulaic movie that avoids the pitfalls and clichés that would otherwise render it forgettable. Since there's nothing new here, you'll appreciate the original quirks in a character-based plot that's just around the corner from Flashdance, and just as familiar. Sara (Julia Stiles) gave up a promising ballet career when her mother was killed while rushing to attend her daughter's crucial audition to Juilliard; Sara blames herself for the accident, and at her new, mostly African American high school in Chicago, she's uncertain of her future.

Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas) has no such doubts; his own future is bright, and his attraction to Sara is immediate; they connect (predictably), and Sara's dormant funk emerges, with Derek's coaching, as she learns hip-hop dancing in a local club. Obligatory subplots are e! qually routine: Derek's sister (Kerry Washington) is a single ! mom stru ggling with her child's absentee father; Derek's best friend (Fredro Starr) feels trapped in his gangsta lifestyle; and Sara's once-estranged father (Terry Kinney) is doing his best to correct past mistakes. Within the confines of this standard follow-your-dream drama, director Thomas Carter capitalizes on a script that allows these characters to be real, intelligent, and thoughtful about their lives and their futures. Shakespeare's tragedy transfers nicely to the film's contemporary private school setting, where Othello is now Odin (Mekhi Phifer), star of the basketball team and the school's only African American student. Desdemona is Desi (Julia Stiles), the dean's daughter and Odin's girlfriend, and Iago is Hugo (Josh Hartnett), the coach's steroid-shooting son, who jealously plants seeds of doubt that fester in Odin's mind, leading them all to a tragically violent fate. As directed by Tim Blak! e Nelson (who played the dimwit Delmar in O Brother, Where Art Thou?), this is a clever and serious interpretation of Shakespeare that, sadly, was shelved for two years when its distributor balked at potential comparisons to the Columbine massacre. Such fears were pointless; this well-acted film delivers an anti-violence message that younger viewers will readily appreciate. --Jeff Shannon
